Senate Bill 2348

AN ACT TO AUTHORIZE LOCAL GOVERNING AUTHORITIES TO POST THE TEN COMMANDMENTS IN THE PUBLIC CHAMBERS IN WHICH THEY MEET; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:

SECTION 1. (1) Any board of supervisors and any municipal governing authority may post the Ten Commandments in the public chamber in which they meet.

(2) A member of the board of supervisors or any municipal governing authority shall not be civilly liable for any action carried out in conformity with this section. The board of supervisors or municipal governing authority may provide any necessary legal defense to any public official in any action which may be filed against the official for following the provisions of this section.

(3) The Secretary of State shall distribute a copy of this act to each county board of supervisors and to each municipal governing authority in the state.

SECTION 2. This act shall take effect and be in force from and after July 1, 2000.
