House Concurrent Resolution 90

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING THE FIRST SUNDAY OF OCTOBER AS "FAMILY DAY."

WHEREAS, the American fabric of society is built on the concept of a strong, central family unit; and

WHEREAS, families provide the essential framework for educational and religious training, establishing and enforcing moral values, companionship and society; and

WHEREAS, many ills in today's society can be directly attributed to the decline in a strong central family over the last several decades; and

WHEREAS, many days are set aside during the year to honor and celebrate various traditions and customs, including fathers, mothers, grandparents, bosses, secretaries, sweethearts and teachers; however, there is no specific day set aside to honor the family:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby recognize the first Sunday of October, beginning in the year 2000, and each year thereafter, as "Family Day" in the State of Mississippi and encourage civic organizations, churches and community leaders throughout the state to celebrate the importance of families on that day, with appropriate recognition and family-based activities.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the Capitol Press Corps.
