House Concurrent Resolution 81

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING MR. JOHN N. PALMER UPON RECEIVING THE 2000 GOVERNOR'S AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE IN THE ARTS PATRON AWARD.

WHEREAS, Mr. John N. Palmer, a resident of Jackson, Mississippi, will receive the 2000 Governor's Awards for Excellence in the Arts Patron Award on March 17, 2000; and

WHEREAS, the Governor's Awards for Excellence in the Arts is a program coordinated by the Mississippi Arts Commission and will be hosted by Governor and Mrs. Ronnie Musgrove; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Palmer, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the National Symphony Orchestra, was instrumental in making Mississippi the eighth state to be chosen for the prestigious 1999 American Residency Program by the National Symphony Orchestra; and

WHEREAS, the John N. Palmer Foundation provided sponsorship to support the in-state administration costs for the residency program; and

WHEREAS, in 1995, Mr. Palmer established the Jonathan M. Sweat Music Endowment, a scholarship fund for music students at Millsaps College; and

WHEREAS, each succeeding year since the endowment's establishment, the income from this gift has enhanced the ability of the Millsaps Performing Arts Department to attract especially gifted and talented students and to provide scholarships for summer study at nationally known music camps and institutes; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to recognize and commend outstanding Mississippians such as Mr. John N. Palmer, whose dedicated leadership to the arts has brought pride to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Mr. John N. Palmer upon receiving the 2000 Governor's Awards for Excellence in the Arts Patron Award and extend our heartiest wishes for success in all his future endeavors.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Mr. John N. Palmer and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
