House Bill 1577

AN ACT MAKING AN APPROPRIATION TO THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION FOR THE PURPOSE OF DEFRAYING THE EXPENSE OF SALARY INCREASES FOR TEACHERS AND ASSISTANT TEACHERS EMPLOYED BY PUBLIC SCHOOL DISTRICTS FOR THE FISCAL YEAR 2001.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:

SECTION 1. The following sum, or so much of it as may be necessary, is appropriated out of any money in the State General Fund not otherwise appropriated, to the State Department of Education for the Minimum Education Program for the purpose of defraying the expense of increasing the salaries of teachers and assistant teachers for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2000, and ending June 30, 2001..........................$110,000,000.00.

SECTION 2. The money appropriated by Section 1 of this act is for the purpose of funding the increase in the annual salaries of teachers prescribed in Section 37-19-7, Mississippi Code of 1972, and the increase in the minimum salary prescribed for assistant teachers in Section 37-21-7, Mississippi Code of 1972, as provided for in House Bill No. 1411, 2000 Regular Session.

SECTION 3. It is the intent of the Legislature that the following sums, or so much of each as may be necessary, shall be appropriated out of any money in the State General Fund not otherwise appropriated, to the State Department of Education for the purpose of defraying the expense of increasing the salaries of teachers and assistant teachers during the 2001-2002 school year and the 2001-2003 school year, as provided for in House Bill No. 1411, 2000 Regular Session:

(a) For the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2001, and ending June 30, 2002..............................$110,000,000.00. (b) For the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2002, and ending June 30, 2003..............................$110,000,000.00. SECTION 4. The money appropriated by Section 1 of this act shall be paid by the State Treasurer out of any money in the State General Fund not otherwise appropriated, upon warrants issued by the State Fiscal Officer; and the State Fiscal Officer shall issue his warrants upon requisitions signed by the proper person, officer or officers in the manner provided by law.

SECTION 5. This act shall take effect and be in force from and after July 1, 2000.
