A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING MISS MISSISSIPPI USA, ANGEL WHATLEY FROM VICKSBURG, MISSISSIPPI, AND WISHING HER SUCCESS AS SHE REPRESENTS MISSISSIPPI IN THE 1998 MISS USA PAGEANT. 

WHEREAS, the reigning Miss Mississippi USA is Angel J. Whatley, who is originally from Vicksburg, Mississippi, and now resides in Jackson, Mississippi; and

WHEREAS, Angel is a 25 year old graduate of Mississippi State University, where she was a member of Phi Mu Sorority, a majorette for the Famous Maroon Band, and a Diamond Girl for the Diamond Dog baseball team; and

WHEREAS, Angel began her pageant career at the age of four and has competed, as well as judged on the local, state and national level; and

WHEREAS, in 1995 she began her quest for the title of Miss Mississippi USA, and is a great example of perseverance having been selected in the Top 10 in 1995, the Top 6 in 1996, and as first alternate to Miss Mississippi USA in 1997; and

WHEREAS, in this year's pageant, Angel was one of 30 contestants who took part in three equal categories of competition that including swimsuit, evening gown and interview, and won a prize package valued at $10,000; and

WHEREAS, she will spend her year traveling throughout the state making personal appearances at local schools, businesses, and charities such as Habitat for Humanity, American Heart Association, United Way and UMC Children's Cancer Clinic; and

WHEREAS, Angel will represent Mississippi in the 1998 Miss USA pageant live on CBS television on March 10, 1998:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the reigning Miss Mississippi USA, Angel Whatley of Vicksburg, Mississippi, and wish her success as she represents our state in the 1998 Miss USA pageant on March 10, 1998.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Angel Whatley and be made available to members of the Capitol Press Corps.
