Senate Concurrent Resolution 653

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE NEWTON COUNTY ACADEMY BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM ON ITS OUTSTANDING 1997-98 SEASON AND FOR WINNING THE CLASS "A" BOYS STATE CHAMPIONSHIP. 

WHEREAS, the Newton County Academy Boys Basketball Team finished the 1997-1998 season with an outstanding record of 28 wins and 6 losses; and

WHEREAS, the team won the State Class "A" Championship after winning the District 3A Tournament; and

WHEREAS, many individuals have been recognized for their hard work, dedication and superior play this season, including the naming of Matthew Roebuck, Tony Pinson and Daniel Munn to the All District Team, Matthew Roebuck and Bryan Hamil to the All Central State Team and Matthew Roebuck, Bryan Hamil and Tony Pinson to the All-State Tournament Team; and

WHEREAS, the team roster is as follows: Seniors--William Hodges, Tony Pinson; Juniors--J. Paul Everett, Bryan Hamil, Jonathan McDonald, Daniel Munn, Kerry Myers, Matthew Roebuck, Skip Stamper; and Sophomores--Jonathan Frith, Nick Massey and Casie Page; and

WHEREAS, the team has been superbly coached by Head Coach Richard Harris and Assistant Coach Malcolm Phillips, who have broadened the players' knowledge of the game and refined their skills in execution; and

WHEREAS, the Newton Academy Boys Basketball Team has developed a winning and cooperative spirit and a high degree of sportsmanship, and their activities and attitude reflect great credit upon the individual players and their coaches and bring honor to their school and their state:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Newton County Academy Boys Basketball Team and its coaches, Head Coach Richard Harris and Assistant Coach Malcolm Phillips, for their outstanding 1997-1998 season, for winning the State Class "A" Championship and for displaying tireless devotion to their athletic endeavors.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Headmaster Bryan Burt of Newton County Academy, Coach Richard Harris and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
