A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING NEWTON HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR COURTNEY SCOGGIN WHO HAS BEEN NAMED MISSISSIPPI'S BEST VOCATIONAL-TECHNICAL STUDENT IN THE ALL-AMERICAN VOCATIONAL STUDENT AWARDS COMPETITION. 

WHEREAS, Newton High School senior Courtney Scoggin has been named Mississippi's best vocational-technical student in the All-American Vocational Student Awards Competition; and

WHEREAS, she will compete with 49 other state winners to be one of 10 national winners or one of 12 special merit honor students; and

WHEREAS, Courtney was one of 3,200 students nationwide to compete in the competition, and final selection of state winners was based on vocational and academic performance, leadership skills and community involvement; and

WHEREAS, the state winners, who were chosen by panels of vocational directors in their respective states, each will receive a $500.00 U.S. Savings Bond and will advance to the national judging round to be held in Washington, D.C.; and

WHEREAS, the awards competition is one component of Tools for Tomorrow, an initiative to support and promote vocational education, sponsored by TruServ Corporation, which has awarded more than $1.5 Million to more than 12,000 outstanding vocational education students in all 50 states, which confirms the corporate belief that vo-tech courses help young people develop the skills they need to be successful in life and in the workplace;

WHEREAS, the national winners will be announced April 26, 1998, and each national winner will receive a $1,000.00 Savings Bond and an all-expense-paid trip to attend the awards ceremony in their honor; and

WHEREAS, Courtney is co-valedictorian of her graduating class, she was the talent winner in the 1997 Newton County Junior Miss competition, was elected the 1997-1998 American Quarter Horse Youth Association corresponding vice-president, and she is past President of the Mississippi Quarter Horse Association; and

WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize one of our "best and brightest" students, who has brought honor to her school, community and state:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Courtney Scoggin, a Newton High School senior, upon being named Mississippi's best vocational-technical student in the All-American Vocational Student Awards Competition, and wish her continued success in the national competition and awards ceremony, and in her future academic and career endeavors.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be presented to Courtney Scoggin, and be furnished to the Principal of Newton High School and the Capitol Press Corps.
