A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING PEGGIE GILLOM, ALL-TIME LEADING SCORER AND REBOUNDER IN OLE MISS LADY REBEL BASKETBALL, UPON HER INDUCTION INTO THE 1998 MISSISSIPPI SPORTS HALL OF FAME. 

WHEREAS, Peggie Gillom was one of the first athletic female superstars in the modern era from Ole Miss and a championship assistant coach for the Lady Rebels, where she is the all-time leading scorer and rebounder in Ole Miss Lady Rebel basketball history; and

WHEREAS, a native of Abbeville, Mississippi, Peggie is a member of the famed Gillom family which has produced a number of stellar athletes; and

WHEREAS, Peggie was a four-year starter for the Lady Rebel basketball team from 1976-1980; she scored 2,486 points and grabbed 1,271 rebounds setting Rebel records that still stand in both categories; Peggie is still the only Lady Rebel to ever score over 2,000 points and pull down over 1,000 rebounds in a career, her numbers even eclipse the Ole Miss men's basketball team; during her standout career at Ole Miss, the Lady Rebel basketball team compiled a 99-46 record; she helped lead the team to the Mississippi AIAW Region III playoffs in her freshman year and to the AIAW Nationals in her sophomore campaign; she played her last two seasons under Van Chancellor in 1978-79 and 1979-80, with the 1978-79 Lady Rebels finishing with a 31-9 record and playing in the AIAW Region III and again playing in the Mississippi AIAW tourney in 1979-80; Peggie was named to the Southeastern Conference All-Tournament team and was a finalist for the Wade Trophy which is emblematic of the top college women's basketball player; and Peggie set the standard for scoring and rebounding for all future Lady Rebel teams and also holds eight other Lady Rebel game, season and career records; and

WHEREAS, following her senior year, Peggie was drafted by the Dallas Diamonds of the Women's Professional Basketball League and played one year of professional basketball, after which she was named as an assistant to Van Chancellor in 1981 and she has coached at "Van The Man's" side for over 16 years; in her coaching tenure, the Lady Rebels had a phenomenal mark of 355 wins and only 108 losses for a 76% winning average; she coached her sister, Jennifer Gillom, from 1982-1986 and Jennifer placed second behind her sister on the all-time Lady Rebel scoring list; she followed Coach Chancellor to coach the NBA's Houston Comets in the league's inaugural season in 1997; and

WHEREAS, on October 26, 1996, Peggie became only the third woman in Ole Miss history to be inducted into the Ole Miss Athletic Hall of Fame; she served on the Ole Miss Sesquicentennial planning committee for the celebration of women at Ole Miss; while at Ole Miss she earned a bachelor's degree in social work and is very active in her church by teaching youth Bible classes; and

WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize this outstanding Mississippi athlete and citizen:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend Peggie Gillom, all-time leading scorer and rebounder in Ole Miss Lady Rebel basketball, upon her induction into the 1998 Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be furnished to the Sports Hall of Fame for presentation to Peggie Gillom and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
