A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING MAYOR TERRY WOOD OF SHERMAN, MISSISSIPPI, FOR BEING THE GRAND PRIZE WINNER OF THE 1997 AMERICAN HOMETOWN LEADERSHIP AWARD. 

WHEREAS, Sherman, Mississippi, Mayor J. Terry Wood has been recognized as the best small-town leader in America, according to a program that awards achievement by officials in communities with 25,000 population or less; and

WHEREAS, Mayor Wood is the grand prize winner of the 1997 American Hometown Leadership Award, sponsored by the National Center for Small Communities and Wal-Mart; and

WHEREAS, chosen the best small-town official from more than 500 nominations, the award cited Mayor Wood for bringing 6 new businesses to Sherman, creating more than 100 new jobs, repairing the town's water and sewer systems, building a new town hall, renovating the town library, doubling the size of the town's police force, building the town's first park and T-ball field, hiring a building inspector, overseeing the establishment of two new subdivisions, establishing a community appearance ordinance, paving all major streets and residential areas, installing street lights and traffic control signals, all when Sherman's tax rates were the lowest in 11 years; and

WHEREAS, on September 5, 1997, Mayor Wood was presented the American Hometown Leadership Award and a $10,000.00 grant check in Washington, D.C., by Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott, R-Miss; and

WHEREAS, Terry has been Mayor of Sherman since 1993, was a professional photographer prior to public service, is a graduate of Corinth High School, attended Itawamba Community College and Jacksonville State University in Alabama, and he and wife Peggy have two sons, James and Richard; and

WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize one of Mississippi's outstanding mayors who has made a profound difference in the lives of the people in the flourishing community of Sherman:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Mayor Terry Wood of Sherman, Mississippi, for being the grand prize winner of the 1997 American Hometown Leadership Award, and wish him and his community continued success in the years to come.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution be presented to Mayor Terry Wood and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
