A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING JOE GARAGIOLA ON HIS BASEBALL CAREER AND EXPRESSING THE APPRECIATION OF THE LEGISLATURE FOR HIS NUMEROUS PUBLIC APPEARANCES TO EDUCATE CITIZENS ABOUT THE DANGERS OF TOBACCO USE. 

WHEREAS, Mr. Joe Garagiola began a career in Major League Baseball in his hometown of St. Louis, Missouri, in 1946 with the Cardinals of the National League; and

WHEREAS, he concluded his career with the New York Giants in 1954, and began a career as a broadcaster and television personality for which he has become nationally known; and

WHEREAS, in 1991, Mr. Garagiola was inducted into the Broadcaster's Wing of the National Baseball Hall of Fame; and

WHEREAS, presently, in addition to being a regular contributor to NBC's Today show, Mr. Garagiola serves as President of the Baseball Assistance Team (B.A.T.), a charitable organization that provides financial assistance to former professional baseball players and family members who have since fallen on hard times and are in need of support; and

WHEREAS, as National Chairman of Oral Health America's National Spit Tobacco Education Program (NSTEP), Mr. Garagiola makes numerous public appearances in an effort to educate the American people about the dangers of tobacco use; and

WHEREAS, it is with great pleasure that we welcome this great sports personality to our state to represent such a worthy cause:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend Mr. Joe Garagiola on his outstanding baseball career and express the appreciation of the Legislature for his numerous public appearances to educate citizens on the dangers of tobacco use.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this Resolution be presented to Mr. Garagiola at his appearance before the Legislature and copies be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
