AN ACT TO AMEND SECTION 9-3-29, MISSISSIPPI CODE OF 1972, TO GRANT THE SUPREME COURT THE AUTHORITY TO APPOINT ONE OR MORE DEPUTY MARSHALS; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:
SECTION 1. Section 9-3-29, Mississippi Code of 1972, is amended as follows:
9-3-29. The Supreme Court may, by order entered on its minutes, appoint a marshal and such deputy marshals as the court may deem necessary, who shall hold their places during the pleasure of the court, and shall attend its sessions, and perform all the duties of a sheriff and deputies attending court, and shall obey all lawful orders of the court. Said marshal and deputy marshals shall each receive a salary to be fixed by the judges of the Supreme Court, through an order entered on the minutes of said court, within its appropriation. They shall be paid on a certificate by the chief justice, or by a justice appointed by him to so act, to the Auditor of Public Accounts, who shall issue his warrant for the amount or amounts so certified to the State Treasurer.
SECTION 2. This act shall take effect and be in force from and after July 1, 1998.
