House Resolution 15

A RESOLUTION COMMENDING MR. ROBERT E. LUCKETT, PRINCIPAL OF RICHLAND HIGH SCHOOL, ON BEING NAMED "PRINCIPAL OF THE YEAR" FOR MISSISSIPPI. 

WHEREAS, Mr. Robert E. Luckett of Florence, principal of Richland High School, has been named the 1997 MetLife National Association of Secondary School Principals "Principal of the Year" for Mississippi by the Mississippi Association of Secondary School Principals; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Luckett, a graduate of Millsaps College, received his master's degree from Mississippi College and his AAA specialist's certification from the University of Southern Mississippi; and

WHEREAS, in addition to his graduate work at Mississippi State University, Jackson State University and the University of Younde in Cameroon, Africa, where he studied under a Fullbright Fellowship, Mr. Luckett has tirelessly completed the Millsaps College Principals Institute, over 75 hours in the Mississippi State Department of Education's Management Institutes and over 30 hours yearly in the Rankin County School District Staff Development Program; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Luckett, Mississippi educator for 31 years, began his dedicated career in education as a social studies teacher at Wingfield High School in Jackson, Mississippi; and

WHEREAS, after serving as assistant principal at Jim Hill High School for two years, Mr. Luckett became the principal of St. Joseph High School in 1973; and

WHEREAS, in 1981, Mr. Luckett was named the first principal of Richland High School, where he has loyally remained for the past 17 years; and

WHEREAS, under the outstanding leadership of Mr. Luckett, Richland High School has seen its curriculum as well as extracurricular programs expand significantly, its test scores improve considerably and the number of graduates attending college increase dramatically; and

WHEREAS, although totally dedicated to his career in education, Mr. Luckett actively participates and has faithfully served in leadership roles for various community organizations, including his service as a member of the Parish Council at St. Peter Catholic Church, a member of the Rankin County Democratic Party Executive Committee, president of the Exchange Club of Richland, youth advisor for Catholic Youth Organization at St. Jude Catholic Church in Pearl, and currently, as head of the Rankin County School District's Benevolence Fund; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Luckett has also served in numerous educational organizations, such as the Mississippi State Committee of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the International Programs Committee of the National Association of Secondary School Principals, and as a board member for the Mississippi Association of Secondary School Principals and chairperson of several School Renewal Review Teams for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools; and

WHEREAS, a goodwill ambassador for Mississippi, Mr. Luckett coordinates the Mississippi/German Principal Exchange Program and has generously hosted in his home and Richland High School three principals and an exchange student from Germany; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Luckett has not only opened his home to those from around the world, but he and his wife have unselfishly been foster parents for 13 young people throughout the years; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Luckett is lovingly supported in all his endeavors by his wife, Jeanne, and their son, Robby; and

WHEREAS, the House of Representatives of this state finds it most appropriate to pay special tribute to such an outstanding Mississippian as Mr. Robert E. Luckett for his dedication to the education and quality of life for the young people of our state:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Mr. Robert E. Luckett, principal of Richland High School, on being named the 1997 MetLife National Association of Secondary School Principals "Principal of the Year" for Mississippi by the Mississippi Association of Secondary School Principals and extend to him our best of wishes in all his future endeavors.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be provided to Mr. Robert E. Luckett, Richland High School and the Capitol Press Corps.
