House Resolution 12

A RESOLUTION COMMENDING RHYTHM AND BLUES ARTIST, MISS DOROTHY MOORE. 

WHEREAS, Miss Dorothy Moore is an internationally acclaimed Rhythm and Blues artist, performing all over the world; and

WHEREAS, Miss Moore began her musical career in the 1960's by participating in local talent shows and session singing; and

WHEREAS, along with two high school friends, Miss Moore formed the group, The Poppies, which recorded "Lullaby of Love," a single that made the Top 40 charts in 1966; and

WHEREAS, Miss Moore continued her career recording her music with labels such as Avco, GSF and Chimneyville Records; and

WHEREAS, in 1975, Miss Moore moved to Malaco Records, which brought her one of the year's hottest international hits, "Misty Blue," topping the charts in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom; and

WHEREAS, over the next two years, Miss Moore had four more songs to hit the charts which included "I Believe in You," "Funny How Time Slips Away," "Let the Music Play" and "With Pen in Hand," which won Song of the Year, Most Played R&B Award; and

WHEREAS, Miss Moore recorded for Fantasy and Rejoice/Word Records in the early 1980's, allowing her to explore her gospel roots and record her album, "Keep Your Eye on Jesus"; and

WHEREAS, a few years later, Miss Moore returned to Rhythm and Blues, recording the albums "Feel the Love" and "Stay Close to Home"; and

WHEREAS, Miss Moore has received numerous awards including, five Grammy nominations, Billboard's Number 1 Best New Female R&B Vocalist, the first annual R&B Female Award, the 1976 Image Award for R&B Artist, she was named by Record World as one of 1977's top female vocalists and NATRA R&B Female Vocalist of the Year; and

WHEREAS, having made a number of television appearances, Miss Moore has been a guest on American Bandstand, Rock Concert, The Mike Douglas Show, Soul Train, Midnight Special, Nashville Now and Bobby Jones's Gospel Show; and

WHEREAS, Miss Moore has performed live all over the world, including a Japan Tour in 1989, a London and Toronto Tour in 1990, the Jazz Club Lionel Hampton in Paris in 1995, Madison Square Garden in New York, the Las Vegas Hilton and The Apollo; and

WHEREAS, in 1993 and 1994, Miss Moore performed at the Monterrey Blues Festival and will perform again in June 1998; and

WHEREAS, the House of Representatives of the State of Mississippi find it most appropriate to pay special tribute to such an outstanding Mississippian as Miss Dorothy Moore, whose music has touched the hearts of millions all over the world:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend successful Rhythm and Blues recording artist, Miss Dorothy Moore, for her long and distinguished career in the music industry and extend our best of wishes in all her future endeavors.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Miss Dorothy Moore and the Capitol Press Corps.
