A RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE LIFE AND SERVICE OF JOSEPH P. STEWART OF CENTREVILLE AND EXPRESSING DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND FRIENDS UPON HIS PASSING.  

WHEREAS, Joseph P. Stewart of Centreville, Mississippi, a man devoted to his family, church and work, departed this life on July 31, 1997, causing great loss not only to his family and friends but to the many friends and co-workers of Alcorn State University; and

WHEREAS, born on December 3, 1918, to the late Mr. and Mrs. Edward Stewart of Centreville, Mississippi, Joseph P. Stewart joined the Centreville Baptist Church at an early age under the leadership of Reverend Jackson; and

WHEREAS, upon receiving his high school diploma, Mr. Stewart furthered his education by attending and graduating from Tennessee State University; and

WHEREAS, before receiving an honorable discharge in 1945, Mr. Stewart exemplified loyalty and patriotism to his country while using his outstanding leadership skills as he served as a Tech Sergeant in World War II; and

WHEREAS, after spending his days as a teacher at Mississippi Valley State College in the early 1950s, Mr. Stewart joined the Alcorn State University family in 1957, where he devoted over twenty-five years of hard work as the Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Stewart is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ruby P. Stewart; his two children, Higdon Michael Stewart and Cassandra L. Stewart; three grandsons; and a host of other family members; and

WHEREAS, the Legislature of the State of Mississippi believes that it is most appropriate to pay special tribute to this outstanding Mississippian who dedicated his life to serving his country, students, church and family:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That the life and service of Joseph P. Stewart are hereby memorialized for the State of Mississippi as an example of a remarkable and dedicated patron of our country and state, whose long and distinguished career epitomizes a life rich in achievement and service to his fellowman.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives does hereby express and extend our heartfelt sympathy to the devoted wife and family of Joseph P. Stewart for their loss.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the family of Joseph P. Stewart and the Capitol Press Corps.
