A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING PEGGIE GILLOM FOR HER INDUCTION INTO THE MISSISSIPPI SPORTS HALL OF FAME. 

WHEREAS, Peggie Gillom, a native Mississippian, will be inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame on March 27, 1998; and

WHEREAS, Peggie Gillom, born April 14, 1958, is a member of the famed Gillom family which has produced a number of stellar athletes; and

WHEREAS, Peggie Gillom was a four-year starter for the Lady Rebel Basketball Team at the University of Mississippi from 1976 to 1980 and was co-captain of the 1980 team; and

WHEREAS, during her standout career at Ole Miss, Peggie Gillom set, and still maintains, the record as the all-time leading scorer with 2,486 points and all-time leading rebounder with 1,271 rebounds in Ole Miss Lady Rebel basketball history; and

WHEREAS, Peggie Gillom helped lead the team to the Mississippi AIAW Region III playoffs and the AIAW Nationals and compiled an outstanding four-year record of 99 wins and 46 losses; and

WHEREAS, Peggie Gillom received numerous awards while playing for the Lady Rebels including being named to the Southeastern Conference All-Tournament Team and named as a finalist for the Wade Trophy, the award named after the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame member Margaret Wade at Delta State; and

WHEREAS, following her senior year, Peggie Gillom played one year of professional basketball when she was drafted by the Dallas Diamonds; and

WHEREAS, in 1981, Peggie Gillom was named Assistant Coach to Van Chancellor and the University of Mississippi Lady Rebel Basketball Team; and

WHEREAS, in her coaching tenure, Peggie Gillom helped lead the Lady Rebels to 12 NCAA Tournaments including nine Sweet 16 and four Elite Eight appearances, lead the 1991-1992 Lady Rebels to their first ever regular season SEC title and maintained a 76% winning average with 355 wins and only 108 losses; and

WHEREAS, Peggie Gillom became only the third woman in Ole Miss history to be inducted into the Ole Miss Athletic Hall of Fame on October 26, 1996; and

WHEREAS, a skilled recruiter and excellent floor coach, Peggie Gillom signed with Coach Chancellor to coach the WNBA's Houston Comets in the league's inaugural season in 1997, winning the first ever WNBA Championship; and

WHEREAS, Peggie Gillom earned a bachelor's degree in social work from Ole Miss and teaches youth Bible classes and reads Christian literature in her spare time; and

WHEREAS, Peggie Gillom has been lovingly supported and encouraged by her No. 1 fan and friend, her mother, Ella Ree Gillom; and

WHEREAS, the Legislature of the State of Mississippi finds it most appropriate to pay special tribute to such a remarkable woman as Peggie Gillom, whose long and distinguished career exemplifies her graceful style as a player and a coach:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Peggie Gillom for her induction into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and extend to her our heartiest wishes in all her future endeavors.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Peggie Gillom and the Capitol Press Corps.
