House Concurrent Resolution 163

WHEREAS, the Vancleave High School Lady Bulldogs Basketball Team finished the 1997-1998 season with an outstanding record of 22 wins and only eight losses; and

WHEREAS, the Lady Bulldogs competed in several tournaments during the season, winning the 3A District 8 Tournament, finishing as the runner up in the South State Tournament and for the first time in school history participated in the State Tournament; and

WHEREAS, the 1997-1998 Vancleave Lady Bulldogs Team consists of seniors, Erica Fairley, Katrina Howard, Tomesha Jackson, Jennie Rice and Raina Robinson; juniors, Felicia Evans and Chrissie Tillman; sophomores, Sharonta Gaines and Shikendah Williams; and freshmen, Breianna Bryant, Rochelle Douglas, Tiffany Dunning, Monica Fairley, Lindsey Ferguson, Nancy Holden and Jekirra Wells; and

WHEREAS, many individuals have been recognized for their hard work, dedication and superior play this season, including the naming of Katrina Howard as the Most Valuable Player in the 3A District 8 Tournament, named to the All-District Tournament Team and named to the Coca-Cola All-Star Team; the selection of Erica Fairley and Jennie Rice to the All-District Tournament Team; the naming of Felicia Evans, Tomesha Jackson and Raina Robinson as Honorable Mention to the All-District Team; and

WHEREAS, the Lady Bulldogs have been superbly coached and inspired by Head Coach David Owens, and Assistant Coach Angela Chancellor, who have broadened the players' knowledge of the game and refined their skills in execution; and

WHEREAS, the Lady Bulldogs have developed a winning and cooperative spirit and a high degree of sportsmanship, and their activities and attitude reflect great credit upon the individual players and their coaches and bring honor to Vancleave High School; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of the Legislature to recognize and commend excellence, especially when evidenced by the youth of our state, who are its future:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we commend and congratulate the Vancleave High School Lady Bulldogs Basketball Team and their coaches, Head Coach David Owens and Assistant Coach Angela Chancellor, for their outstanding 1997-1998 season, for their first tournament appearance in school history and for displaying tireless devotion to their athletic endeavors.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Vancleave High School, Head Coach David Owens and Assistant Coach Angela Chancellor.
