A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE WINSTON ACADEMY PATRIOTS FOOTBALL TEAM FOR AN OUTSTANDING 1997 SEASON AND FOR WINNING THE CLASS A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP. 

WHEREAS, the Winston Academy Patriots Football Team finished the 1997 season with a remarkable record of 14 wins and no losses; and

WHEREAS, the Patriots played exceptionally well in the playoffs this year, winning the District 3 Tournament and the Class A State Championship, which is the school's third state title; and

WHEREAS, the Patriots overwhelmed and totally dominated their opponents throughout the season, rolling up a total of 569 points while allowing their opponents to score only 161 points; and

WHEREAS, in recognition of their outstanding accomplishments during the season, the Patriots were chosen as the Columbus Dispatch Team of the Year; and

WHEREAS, many members of the team have received recognition for their hard work, dedication and superior play this season, including the naming of Davey Crawley to the All-State first team, the All-Conference team and as The Meridian Star Player of the Year, the selection of Wes Higginbotham to the All-State second team and the All-Conference team, the naming of Robin Barnett, Jason McNeel, Josh Miles, Tom Simmonds and Matt Young to the All-Conference team and the selection of Josh Edwards, John Adam Long, Will Massey, Brant Peterson and Adam White to the All-Conference Honorable Mention team; and

WHEREAS, the Patriots have been superbly coached and inspired this season by Head Coach Mark Hudspeth and Assistant Coaches Paul Anderson, Wayne Gordon, Chad Griffin and Kenny Wolfe, who have broadened the players' knowledge of the game and refined their skills in execution; and

WHEREAS, Coach Hudspeth has brought additional honor to himself and to Winston Academy by being selected as the District 3-A Coach of the Year and The Meridian Star Coach of the Year; and

WHEREAS, the Patriots have received the support of encouragement of the team chaplain, Kenneth Eaves and the team statistician, Wendell Womack; and

WHEREAS, the Patriots have developed a winning and cooperative spirit and a high degree of sportsmanship, and their activities and attitude reflect great credit upon the individual players and their coaches and bring honor to Winston Academy; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to recognize and commend excellence, especially when evidenced by the youth of our state, who are its future:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we commend and congratulate the Winston Academy Patriots Football Team and their coaches, Head Coach Mark Hudspeth and Assistant Coaches Paul Anderson, Wayne Gordon, Chad Griffin and Kenny Wolfe, for their outstanding 1997 season, for winning the Class A State Championship and for displaying tireless devotion to their athletic endeavors.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Winston Academy, Head Coach Mark Hudspeth and Assistant Coaches Paul Anderson, Wayne Gordon, Chad Griffin and Kenny Wolfe.
