House Concurrent Resolution 136

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING PROVINE HIGH SCHOOL RAMS BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM ON AN OUTSTANDING SEASON AND FOR WINNING THE CLASS 5A BOYS STATE CHAMPIONSHIP. 

WHEREAS, the Provine High School Rams Boys Basketball Team finished the 1997-1998 season with an outstanding record of 37 wins and only one loss; and

WHEREAS, the Provine Rams competed in various tournaments during the season, winning the Pepsi Tournament, the City Tournament, the District Tournament and the South State Tournament; and

WHEREAS, the Rams did very well in the state playoffs, winning the Class 5A Boys State Championship for the first state title in school history; and

WHEREAS, many individuals have been recognized for their hard work, dedication and superior play this season, including the naming of David Sanders as Most Valuable Player in the Pepsi Tournament, MVP in the City Tournament, MVP in the District Tournament, MVP in the South State Tournament, named to the Dandy Dozen for 1998, named as Gatorade Player of the Year 1998, The Clarion-Ledger Player of the Year 1998 and Metro Player of the Year; Aaron Harper named to the All-Tournament Teams for the Pepsi Tournament, the City Tournament, the District Tournament, the South State Tournament and the State Tournament, named to the Dandy Dozen for 1998; Justin Reed named to the All-Tournament Teams for the Pepsi Tournament, the City Tournament, the South State Tournament and the State Tournament, named one of Top 10 Sophomores in the nation; and Marcus Terrell named to the All-Tournament Team for the District Tournament; and

WHEREAS, the Rams have been superbly coached by Head Coach Wayne Brent, and Assistant Coaches Brian Anderson and Charles Wansley, who have broadened the players' knowledge of the game and refined their skills in execution; and

WHEREAS, the Provine Rams have been ranked No. 1 by the Mississippi Clarion-Ledger, No. 25 in the nation by USA Today, No. 7 in the South by USA Today and No. 16 in the National Prep Poll; and

WHEREAS, the Rams have developed a winning and cooperative spirit and a high degree of sportsmanship, and their activities and attitude reflect great credit upon the individual players and their coaches and bring honor to Provine High School; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of the Legislature to recognize and commend excellence, especially when evidenced by the youth of our state who are its future:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we commend and congratulate the Provine High School Rams Boy Basketball Team and their coaches, Head Coach Wayne Brent and Assistant Coaches Brian Anderson and Charles Wansley for their outstanding 1997-1998 season, for winning the Class 5A Boys State Championship and for displaying tireless devotion to their athletic endeavors.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Provine High School, Head Coach Wayne Brent and Assistant Coaches Brian Anderson and Charles Wansley.
