House Concurrent Resolution 132

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING SIDNEY DEWITT DAVIS FOR HIS CONTRIBUTIONS TO HIS COMMUNITY AND MANY OUTSTANDING ACCOMPLISHMENTS. 

WHEREAS, Mr. Sidney Dewitt Davis devoted time and energy to his local community and achieved many outstanding accomplishments; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Davis was born on January 21, 1914, in Mendenhall, Mississippi, and graduated from Mendenhall Agricultural High School in 1928; and

WHEREAS, after finishing high school, Mr. Davis furthered his education, earning a bachelor's degree from Mississippi College in Clinton, Mississippi, in 1932; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Davis began working at Peoples Bank in Mendenhall as a file clerk following graduation from college in December 1932; and

WHEREAS, with the exception of serving for a few years in the Army during World War II, Mr. Davis worked continuously at the Peoples Bank for over 65 years; and

WHEREAS, having served as chairman of the board, Mr. Davis worked to maintain the business and the trust of the customers at Peoples Bank; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Davis served his community in other capacities by participating in organizations such as the local school board, charter member and former president of the Mendenhall Lions Club, treasurer of the Mississippi Economics Council, former president of the Mississippi Bankers Association, former president of the Mendenhall Area Chamber of Commerce, board member of the Mississippi Baptist Hospital and also served as a Deacon and Trustee of First Baptist Church, Mendenhall; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Davis received numerous awards for his outstanding service such as the Order of Silver Beaver Award from the Boy Scouts of America, the Order of Golden Arrow Award from Mississippi College and the Outstanding Citizen of Mendenhall Award; and

WHEREAS, portrayed as Jimmy Stewart in Its A Wonderful Life, Mr. Davis was honored on the NBC Nightly News report which aired on December 24, 1997; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Davis is survived by his lovely wife, Inez, and five children, Sid, Deborah, Jean, Marty and Phillip; and

WHEREAS, the Legislature of the State of Mississippi finds it most appropriate to recognize and commend such an outstanding man as Mr. Sidney Davis, for serving his country, his family and his neighbors:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we commend the life and accomplishments of Mr. Sidney Davis and express our deepest sympathy to his family upon his passing.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the family of Mr. Sidney Davis and the Capitol Press Corps.
