House Concurrent Resolution 131

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE MURRAH HIGH SCHOOL LADY MUSTANGS BASKETBALL TEAM FOR AN OUTSTANDING 1997-1998 SEASON AND FOR WINNING THE CLASS 5A GIRLS STATE CHAMPIONSHIP. 

WHEREAS, the Murrah High School Lady Mustangs Basketball Team finished the 1997-1998 season with an outstanding perfect record of 36 wins and no losses; and

WHEREAS, the Lady Mustangs competed in various tournaments throughout the season, winning the Murrah Round Robin, the Jackson Public School (JPS)/Pepsi Holiday Champions and the City Championship; and

WHEREAS, the Lady Mustangs did very well in the state playoffs this year, winning the District 5 Class 5A Championship, the South State Championship and the Class 5A State Championship; and

WHEREAS, many individual honors have been bestowed upon various team members in recognition of their fine, dedicated play this season including the naming of Ebony Felder to All-JPS/Pepsi and Most Valuable Player, All-City and Most Valuable Player, Sportsmanship Award, and All-South State; Kesha Tardy to All-JPS/Pepsi, All-City, All-Division, All-South State and All-State; Latasha Kenny to All-JPS/Pepsi, All-Division, and All-South State; Yetta Enobakhare to All-City, All-Division, All-South State and All-State; and Tamika Rogers to All-Division and All-State; and

WHEREAS, the Lady Mustangs have been superbly coached by Head Coach Anna Jackson and Assistant Coach Charles Dillon, who have broadened the players' knowledge of the game and refined their skills in execution; and

WHEREAS, Coach Jackson has coached the Lady Mustangs for the past 15 years with a winning record of 364 wins and 124 losses; and

WHEREAS, the Lady Mustangs have been ranked No. 1 all year in the State of Mississippi, ranked No. 2 in the South Region, and ranked No. 12 in USA Today; and

WHEREAS, the Lady Mustangs have developed a winning and cooperative spirit and a high degree of sportsmanship, and their activities and attitude reflect great credit upon the individual players and their coaches and bring honor to Murrah High School; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of the Legislature to recognize and commend excellence, especially when evidenced by the youth of our state, who are its future:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do commend and congratulate the Murrah High School Lady Mustangs and their coaches, Head Coach Anna Jackson and Assistant Coach Charles Dillon, for their outstanding 1997-1998 season, for winning the Class 5A Girls State Championship and for displaying tireless devotion to their athletic endeavors.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Murrah High School, Head Coach Anna Jackson and Assistant Coach Charles Dillon.
