A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING POLICE CHIEF ROBERT JOHNSON ON HIS OUTSTANDING SERVICE TO THE CITY OF JACKSON.
WHEREAS, Robert Johnson, former Chief of Police for the City of Jackson, Mississippi, has served 11 years in a capacity as a chief law enforcement officer and a total of 20 years in a supervisory or administrative capacity; and
WHEREAS, after pursuing general studies at Tennessee State University and receiving his Bachelor's Degree in Human Resource Management from Spring Arbor College, Chief Johnson received his Masters Degree in Public Administration from Western Michigan University; and
WHEREAS, Chief Johnson, in addition to his college and graduate education, has studied with various special agencies, including Mississippi Law Enforcement Standards and Training Board, FBI-Law Enforcement Executive Development, Federal Emergency Management Agency, FBI National Academy and the United States Justice Department; and
WHEREAS, throughout Chief Johnson's career with the Jackson Police Department, he has worked to establish an E-911 communication center, implemented neighborhood policing, created innovative drug enforcement strategies and developed a federal, state, and local crime task force; and
WHEREAS, Chief Johnson was instrumental in the drafting of legislation establishing auto theft as a crime, and in creating legislation which increased funding to municipalities by raising the split in drug forfeiture from 50% to 80%; and
WHEREAS, Chief Johnson is affiliated with numerous professional organizations, including the FBI National Academy Associates, Greater Jackson Law Enforcement Association, Mississippi Association of Chiefs of Police, International Association of Chiefs of Police, National Sheriffs Association and Mississippi Commission on Criminal Justice Reform; and
WHEREAS, over the past 20 years, Chief Johnson has received recognition and awards such as Man of the Year, Citizen of the Year, Distinguished Alumni Award, Outstanding Service Award, Appreciation Award and the Susan B. Anthony Award; and
WHEREAS, the Legislature of the State of Mississippi believes that it is most appropriate to pay special tribute to such a remarkable individual as Chief Robert Johnson, who has dedicated his life to protecting and meeting the needs of those citizens within his jurisdiction:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend former Chief of Police Robert Johnson, whose long and distinguished career is the epitome of a life dedicated to serving the people and also extend to him our best of wishes in all his future endeavors.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Chief Robert Johnson and the Capitol Press Corps.
