House Concurrent Resolution 42

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING MAYOR HARVEY JOHNSON, JR., OUTSTANDING NEW MAYOR OF THE CITY OF JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI. 

WHEREAS, Mayor Johnson, a native of Mississippi, graduated from Vicksburg Public Schools before furthering his education at Tennessee State University, where he received his bachelor's degree; and

WHEREAS, in addition to his college degree, Mayor Johnson earned a master's degree from the University of Cincinnati and completed course work toward a Ph.D. in Public Administration at the University of Southern California's Washington Public Affairs Center in Washington, D.C.; and

WHEREAS, Mayor Johnson served as the former executive director of the Mississippi Institute for Small Towns, Inc., which developed and implemented water, sewer and housing projects for communities throughout Mississippi; and

WHEREAS, having served on the Board of Directors for Union Planters Bank of Central Mississippi, Smith Robertson Museum, the Central Mississippi Chapter of the American Red Cross, New Stage Theater and the Metropolitan YMCA, Mayor Johnson is able to utilize his excellent leadership skills; and

WHEREAS, Mayor Johnson, a former assistant professor of Political Science at Jackson State University, has written several pieces for the Jackson Clarion-Ledger as one of its Reader's Editorial Board writers and appeared regularly on WAPT-TV, Channel 16 as a political commentator; and

WHEREAS, Mayor Harvey Johnson is lovingly supported in all his endeavors by his wife, Kathy, and their two children, Harvey III and Sharla; and

WHEREAS, the Legislature of the State of Mississippi believes that it is most appropriate to pay special tribute to such an outstanding Mississippian as Mayor Johnson, who is truly an example of a remarkable and dedicated citizen whose career has impacted those he has loyally served:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That the accomplishments of Mayor Harvey Johnson, Jr., are hereby commended by the State of Mississippi, whose long and distinguished career epitomizes a life rich in achievement and service to fellowman and extend to him our heartiest wishes for success in all his future endeavors.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Mayor Harvey Johnson, Jr., and the Capitol Press Corps.
