A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING DR. STARKEY MORGAN, SR., ON BEING SELECTED BY THE MISSISSIPPI ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT COUNCIL AS THE RECIPIENT OF THE 1996 VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR AWARD.
WHEREAS, Dr. Starkey Morgan, Sr., ED.D., President of Holmes Community College in Goodman, has been selected by the Mississippi Economic Development Council as the recipient of the 1996 Volunteer of the Year Award which pays tribute to unpaid workers who have been instrumental in the location of new and expanding industries in their communities; and
WHEREAS, having served as President of the Holmes County Economic Development Authority for two years, Dr. Morgan's outstanding leadership resulted in remarkable opportunities for economic development in Holmes County; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Morgan established the first full-time staff and office for economic development emphasizing the importance of industrial development and industrial training; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Morgan was instrumental in Fleetwood Enterprises' decision to locate a third plant in Lexington, which resulted in a $7 million investment and 180 new jobs for the community; and
WHEREAS, after a tornado struck the Tchula Public Attendance Center, Dr. Morgan used his resources to provide classrooms for the students allowing the seniors to graduate on time; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Morgan used the college as the major provider of training resources for the Goodman Fire Department and provided initial housing for E911; and
WHEREAS, along with performing his duties as President of Holmes Community College and Holmes County Economic Development Authority, Dr. Morgan also serves on the Executive Committee of the Central Mississippi Private Industry Council, is a member of the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges and a member of the United Methodist Church; and
WHEREAS, the Legislature of the State of Mississippi believes that it is most appropriate to pay special tribute to such an excellent community leader as Dr. Morgan, who unselfishly contributed his time, energy and abilities to improving and expanding the economic development of Holmes County:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Dr. Starkey Morgan, Sr., President of Holmes Community College, on being selected as the 1996 Volunteer of the Year for the Mississippi Economic Development Council and extend to him our heartiest wishes for success in all his future endeavors.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Dr. Starkey Morgan and the Capitol Press Corps.
