A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE GEORGE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL LADY REBELS TRACK TEAM ON THEIR OUTSTANDING 1997 SEASON AND FOR WINNING THE STATE CLASS 4A TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIP. 

WHEREAS, the George County High School Lady Rebels Track Team compiled an outstanding record during the 1997 season by winning eleven of twelve meets the team competed in; and

WHEREAS, during their incredibly successful season, the Lady Rebels, who won their district and regional championships, advanced to the state championship competition where they won the South State Class 4A State Championship and captured the State Class 4A Track and Field State Championship; and

WHEREAS, during the course of winning the State Class 4A Track and Field Championship, several Lady Rebels put forth superb effort in winning numerous individual and team relay championships, including Christy Fairley who won the 100, 200 and 400 meter individual championships, Maria Smith who won the 110 meter hurdles championship with the best time in the entire state for all classes in this event and finished second in the 300 meter hurdles competition, Octavia Carter who finished second in the 110 meter hurdles competition, Ayesha Bradley, Cassandra Townsel, Jamelia Nix and Christy Fairley who won the 800 and 1600 meter relay championships, and Tiffany Love who along with Ayesha Bradley, Cassandra Townsel and Christy Fairley won the 400 meter team relay championship; and

WHEREAS, under the leadership of Coach Melanie Black, who was named Coach of the Year by the Mississippi Press Register newspaper, the Lady Rebels have developed a winning program and display a high degree of sportsmanship, and their activities and attitude reflect a great credit upon the individual team members and their coach and bring honor to their school; and

WHEREAS, in addition to making her team members winners on the track, Coach Black also instills in her team the qualities and attributes necessary to make them good young women for today's society and leaders for tomorrow; and

WHEREAS, the people of Mississippi are extremely proud of the George County High School Lady Rebels Track Team, who, as being true winners on and off the track, represent their school and George County, Mississippi, in an excellent manner wherever they go:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we commend the George County High School Lady Rebels Track Team for winning the State Class 4A Track and Field Championship during their outstanding 1997 season and we express our appreciation to them for the excellent representation which they give their school and George County, Mississippi, wherever they go.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to George County High School, the coach and all members of the George County High School Lady Rebels Track Team and members of the Capitol Press Corps.
