AN ACT TO PROVIDE THAT NO PERSON MAY ENROLL IN THE PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM FOR MORE THAN FIFTEEN YEARS; TO AUTHORIZE THE LOCAL SCHOOL BOARDS TO MAKE EXCEPTIONS TO THE MAXIMUM NUMBER OF YEARS; TO PROVIDE THAT PERSONS DENIED ENROLLMENT AFTER FIFTEEN YEARS IN THE PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM MAY PARTICIPATE IN GED CLASSES IN THE SCHOOL DISTRICT OR AT A COMMUNITY/JUNIOR COLLEGE; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES. 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:

SECTION 1. (1) No person may be enrolled in the public schools of the state for a total of more than fifteen (15) years; however, the school board of any school district in which a person is enrolled or seeking to be enrolled after having completed fifteen (15) years in the public school system, in its discretion, may authorize the enrollment of such person in that school district, subject to any terms and conditions imposed by the local school board.

(2) Any person who is not allowed to enroll in a public school under subsection (1) of this section may participate, in their discretion, in General Educational Development (GED) classes administered by a local school district or any community/junior college.

SECTION 2. This act shall take effect and be in force from and after July 1, 1998.
