AN ACT TO REDUCE THE SIZE OF THE LEGISLATURE BEGINNING WITH THE REAPPORTIONMENT OF THE LEGISLATURE THAT IS BASED UPON THE DECENNIAL CENSUS FOR THE YEAR 2000; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.  

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:

SECTION 1. (1) In any reapportionment of the Legislature based upon the decennial census for the year 2000, the number of Senators shall be forty-five (45) and the number of Representatives shall be one hundred twelve (112).

(2) In any reapportionment of the Legislature based upon the decennial census for the year 2010, the number of Senators shall be forty (40) and the number of Representatives shall be ninety-nine (99).

(3) In any reapportionment of the Legislature based upon the decennial census for the year 2020, or any decennial census thereafter, the number of Senators shall be thirty-five (35) and the number of Representatives shall be eighty-five (85).

SECTION 2. The Attorney General of the State of Mississippi shall submit this act, immediately upon approval by the Governor, or upon approval by the Legislature subsequent to a veto, to the Attorney General of the United States or to the United States District Court for the District of Columbia in accordance with the provisions of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, as amended and extended.

SECTION 3. This act shall take effect and be in force from and after the date it is effectuated under Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, as amended and extended.
