AN ACT TO REQUIRE ALL PUBLIC SCHOOL SEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS TO BE TAUGHT HEALTH EDUCATION; TO PROVIDE FOR AN ALLOTMENT OF FUNDS UNDER THE MINIMUM EDUCATION PROGRAM TO EMPLOY LICENSED TEACHERS IN EACH SCHOOL DISTRICT FOR THE PURPOSE OF TEACHING THE HEALTH CLASSES; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES. 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:

SECTION 1. In addition to the curriculum otherwise required by law or the State Board of Education to be taught in the public schools of this state, a health class shall be required for all seventh grade students. Each health class taught pursuant to this section shall meet no less than one (1) classroom period per week.

SECTION 2. In addition to the other funds allotted under the minimum education program, each school district shall be allotted sufficient funding to employ no less than one (1) licensed teacher per each one hundred thirty-five (135) students in average daily attendance in the district for the purpose of providing a health class to the seventh grade students in that school district.

SECTION 3. Section 1 of this act shall be codified as a separate code section in Chapter 13, Title 37, Mississippi Code of 1972. Section 2 of this act shall be codified as a separate code section in Chapter 19, Title 37, Mississippi Code of 1972.

SECTION 4. This act shall take effect and be in force from and after July 1, 1998.
