AN ACT TO SET THE SALARIES OF THE ACADEMIC FACULTY OF THE MISSISSIPPI PUBLIC COMMUNITY AND JUNIOR COLLEGES AT THE MIDPOINT BETWEEN THE AVERAGE SALARIES OF THE PUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOLS' TEACHING OR INSTRUCTIONAL PERSONNEL AND THE SALARIES OF THE ACADEMIC FACULTY OF THE STATE'S PUBLIC INSTITUTIONS OF HIGHER LEARNING OR ALTERNATIVELY, TO PROVIDE THE ACADEMIC FACULTY A $3,000.00 SALARY INCREASE; TO REQUIRE THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF EACH COMMUNITY OR JUNIOR COLLEGE TO PROVIDE FOR THE SALARY INCREASE; TO PROVIDE THAT THE LEGISLATURE SHALL APPROPRIATE THE FUNDS NECESSARY FOR THE SALARY INCREASES; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES. 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:

SECTION 1. The board of trustees of each of the state's public community or junior college shall provide for an increase in the salaries of their academic faculty of not less than twenty-seven and six-tenths percent (27.6%) or that amount necessary to raise the salaries to the midpoint between the average salaries of the public secondary schools' teaching or instructional personnel and the salaries of the academic faculty of the state's public institutions of higher learning. As an alternative, the board of trustees of a community or junior college may provide the academic faculty a salary increase of Three Thousand Dollars ($3,000.00).

The Legislature shall appropriate the funds necessary to carry out the intent and purpose of this act.

SECTION 2. This act shall take effect and be in force from and after July 1, 1998.
