A RESOLUTION HONORING MR. JAMES SMITH, SR., FOR HIS MANY CONTRIBUTIONS TO HIS COMMUNITY. 

WHEREAS, Mr. James Smith, Sr., has for many years been a valued member of the community in Mendenhall, Mississippi; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Smith was for thirty-five years an indispensable employee of the Illinois Central Railroad Company, steadily advancing in responsibilities because of his diligence and dedication; and

WHEREAS, although he retired from the railroad in 1972, Mr. Smith has continued to work in his community, performing those helpful tasks that, at the age of 89, he has been sustained by his faith to accomplish; and

WHEREAS, he is well known and respected for his many services to the community, particularly his work with the school board and with his church; and

WHEREAS, he is the proud father of eight children, the grandfather of twelve and the great-grandfather of ten; and

WHEREAS, realizing the significance of education and its fundamental importance in opening doors of opportunity to achievement, he was steadfast in seeing that every one of his children graduated from college; and

WHEREAS, the City of Mendenhall has recently recognized him by proposing that one of the municipal streets be renamed in his honor; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of the Senate to recognize citizens of this state who have made significant contributions to their communities:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MISSISSIPPI STATE SENATE, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Mr. James Smith, Sr., for the outstanding example he has set both in his work and in his life, and we join our praise with that of his neighbors and friends in expressing our thanks for the many ways in which he has enriched his community.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be presented to Mr. James Smith, Sr.
