A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE LIFE OF DEPUTY SHERIFF J.P. RUTLAND. 

WHEREAS, J.P. Rutland, a native of Monticello, Mississippi, the son of Alice Hedgepeth Rutland and the late Leslie Rutland, departed this life on Friday, February 26, 1997; and

WHEREAS, J.P. Rutland was a Deputy Sheriff for Jefferson Davis County; and

WHEREAS, J.P. Rutland had served as the Police Chief in Monticello, as a Deputy Sheriff for Lawrence County and as a member of the Pearl Police Department; and

WHEREAS, his community and the citizens of the entire State of Mississippi were shocked at J.P. Rutland's untimely and tragic death in the line of duty; and

WHEREAS, hundreds of law enforcement officers from every agency in the state and from the states of Alabama, Florida and Tennessee converged to honor their fallen comrade; and

WHEREAS, J.P. Rutland is a part of the rich legacy of law enforcement officers to whom the citizens of this state owe a debt that cannot be paid; and

WHEREAS, J.P. Rutland is survived by his wife, Linda McLeod Rutland; two sons, James C. Rutland and Darrell Rutland, both of Pearl; one daughter, Judy Gail Rutland of Pearl; one step-son, Brad Dunaway of Prentiss; his mother, Alice Rutland of Raymond and one brother, L.J. Rutland of Raymond; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of the Legislature to commend the meritorious service of the citizens of this state:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend the life of Deputy Sheriff J.P. Rutland and express our deepest sympathy to his family.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy be presented to the family of J.P. Rutland.
