Senate Concurrent Resolution 623

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE WEST UNION LADY EAGLES BASKETBALL TEAM FOR ITS OUTSTANDING 1996-1997 SEASON. 

WHEREAS, the West Union Lady Eagles Basketball Team finished the 1996-1997 season with an outstanding record of 34 wins and 3 losses; and

WHEREAS, the Lady Eagles are the 1996-1997 State 1A Champions by virtue of winning the District 2-1A Championship Tournament; and

WHEREAS, the Lady Eagles competed in and won the West Union Tournament, the Myrtle Tournament, and the North-Half Tournament; and placed second in the District Tournament and the Union County Tournament; and

WHEREAS, the Lady Eagles have played excellent basketball as a team and as individuals with specific honors awarded to: Crystal Young: All-District, All-North Half and All-State; Jill Goolsby: All-District, All-North Half and All-State; Tana Kirk: All-District and All-State; Julie Downs: All-District and All-State; and Jennifer Carter: All-North Half; and

WHEREAS, the Lady Eagles have been superbly coached and inspired by Head Coach Ken Basil, who has broadened the players' knowledge of the game and refined their skills in execution; and

WHEREAS, the Lady Eagles have developed a winning and cooperative spirit and an excellent degree of sportsmanship, and their activities and attitude reflect great credit upon the individual players and their coaches and bring honor to West Union High School; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of the Legislature to recognize and commend excellence, especially when evidenced by the youth of our state, who are its future:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MISSISSIPPI STATE SENATE, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the West Union Lady Eagles Basketball Team and Head Coach Ken Basil for their outstanding 1996-1997 season and for displaying tireless devotion to their athletic endeavors.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to West Union High School, Coach Ken Basil, and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
