Senate Concurrent Resolution 621

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING LILLIAN IRENE BRELAND UPON HER MANY ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN LIFE AND CONGRATULATING HER UPON THE OCCASION OF HER NINETIETH BIRTHDAY. 

WHEREAS, Lillian Irene Breland was born on April 17, 1907, in Leakesville, Mississippi, to Minnie Peaster and Daniel Elza Breland; and

WHEREAS, Miss Breland was educated in the public schools and received a bachelor's degree from Millsaps College, attended the Universities of Virginia and Colorado and received her masters degree from Mississippi College; and

WHEREAS, she taught for over forty-one years in this state and was a counselor at Murrah High School in Jackson, Mississippi; and

WHEREAS, while at Murrah High School Miss Breland was nicknamed "Sunshine" by students and was awarded the honor of "Teacher of the Year;" and

WHEREAS, before moving to Jackson she taught school in Porterville, Runnelstown, New Hebron and Glen Allan and also coached basketball for several years; and

WHEREAS, when Miss Breland first moved to Jackson she taught at Liberty Grove School which is today Watkins Elementary School; and

WHEREAS, she was appointed to the State Textbook Board by Governor Paul B. Johnson in 1964; and

WHEREAS, Miss Breland, a member of Riverside Independent Methodist Church, has been extremely active in her church, teaching Sunday School, serving as the President of the Methodist Women's Missionary Society; and

WHEREAS, she is a member of several historical clubs and has a deep interest in flowers; and

WHEREAS, in 1994 she was honored by her former students with a trip to New York City where she was a special guest at the Waldorf Astoria; and

WHEREAS, Miss Breland has over the years touched the lives of countless people; and

WHEREAS, on April 17, 1997, Miss Lillian Irene Breland will reach a milestone in her life when she celebrates her ninetieth birthday:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MISSISSIPPI STATE SENATE, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend Miss Lillian Irene Breland upon her many accomplishments in life and congratulate her upon the occasion of her ninetieth birthday.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be presented to Miss Lillian Irene Breland.
