Senate Concurrent Resolution 611

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION TO COMMEND THE OXFORD HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM UPON WINNING THE 4A CHAMPIONSHIP. 

WHEREAS, the Oxford High School Girls Basketball Team completed the 1996-1997 season with a 34-3 record; and

WHEREAS, the team's outstanding sportsmanship and determined competition earned them memorable success in tournament play; and

WHEREAS, the Lady Chargers won the District I-4A championship, were victorious in the North Mississippi 4A title game and topped all rivals to become the State 4A Champions; and

WHEREAS, the Lady Chargers also competed in the Junior Achievement Tournament in Longview, Texas, the second ranked high school tournament in the country, and received another invitation to the tournament next season; and

WHEREAS, the members of this team include Meg Banahan, Beth Barnes, Keri Coleman, Kim Cooper, Amie Ewing, Marni Fitts, Molly Fitts, Kesha Howell, Tameshia Johnson, Tasheba Lester, Molly McAlexander, Jamila Quarles, Allison Shaw and Melissa Vail; and

WHEREAS, the team was assisted by their managers Carmin Horn, Angel Overstreet and Dani Walker; and

WHEREAS, the team has been ably coached and inspired by Head Coach Jeff Nelson, Assistant Coach Robie Clark and Athletic Director Robert Youngblood; and

WHEREAS, throughout the past 12 years, the Lady Chargers have accumulated numerous awards and accomplishments, including a rank in the AP Top 20 for 12 consecutive years; 7 State Tournament appearances; 2 State 4A Championships (1996 & 1997); 28 college signees; and an overall record of 355 wins and 66 losses; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of the Legislature to commend outstanding achievements by the youth of this state:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MISSISSIPPI STATE SENATE, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we hereby commend and congratulate the Oxford High School Girls Basketball Team for its 1996-1997 championship season and we wish them continued success in the future.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be sent to the Oxford High School Lady Chargers.
