A SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING DR. SAMUEL MARSHALL GORE ON RECEIVING THE CAREER IN THE ARTS AWARD OF THE GOVERNOR'S AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE IN THE ARTS. 

WHEREAS, Dr. Samuel Marshall Gore, a well-known and established presence at Mississippi College in Clinton, Mississippi, has recently received the Career in the Arts Award of the Governor's Awards for Excellence in the Arts; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Samuel Marshall Gore began teaching art in 1951 and continues today on a part-time basis after 42 years of full-time teaching; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Samuel Marshall Gore, who during his tenure served as Art Department Head and achieved rank of professor, has educated many students, passing his love of art on to them; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Samuel Marshall Gore elevated Mississippi College's burgeoning art program from elective courses to a degree program with four full-time teachers; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Samuel Marshall Gore built a foundry at Mississippi College, which enables bronze casting in sculpture class; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Samuel Marshall Gore's sculpture and paintings are housed in prominent Mississippi places: Student Nurse (1989), a bronze sculpture, resides in the lobby of the Mississippi Baptist Medical Center; The Working Man (1992) resides in front of the Jim Buck Ross Mississippi Agriculture and Forestry Museum; and a mural is housed at the Natural Science Museum; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Samuel Marshall Gore has completed numerous sculptures and murals for private collections, and has conducted more than 500 sculptural programs in 16 states and foreign countries for churches, colleges, civic organizations, the armed forces, and public and commercial television programs in the South; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of the Legislature to recognize excellence especially when evidenced by individuals who have distinguished themselves in their chosen field:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend Dr. Samuel Marshall Gore on receiving the Career in the Arts Award of the Governor's Awards for Excellence in the Arts.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED That copies of this resolution be furnished to Dr. Samuel Marshall Gore and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
