AN ACT TO PROVIDE FOR COST OF LIVING INCREASES FOR STATE EMPLOYEES AND SCHOOL PERSONNEL; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES. 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:

SECTION 1. (1) For Fiscal Year 1997-1998, the compensation of each state employee, teacher, vocational technical education personnel, reading assistant and other school personnel shall be increased by an amount equal to the cost of living based on the consumer price index for the past twelve (12) months.

(2) If the increases in compensation provided for in this section would cause any employee's compensation to be in excess of the compensation of the executive head of the department or institution with which he is employed, then that employee's compensation shall be increased only to the extent that the employee's salary will be equal in amount to the compensation of the executive head.

(3) The Legislature shall appropriate the funds necessary to provide for the increases in compensation provided for in this act.

SECTION 2. This act shall take effect and be in force from and after its passage.
