AN ACT TO CREATE SECTION 23-15-810, MISSISSIPPI CODE OF 1972, TO LIMIT THE AMOUNT OF CAMPAIGN CONTRIBUTIONS AND EXPENDITURES FOR CERTAIN POLITICAL CANDIDATES; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.  

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:

SECTION 1. The following section shall be codified as Section 23-15-810, Mississippi Code of 1972:

23-15-810. (1) It is unlawful for any person seeking election to any municipal office, county office, county district office, state district office or legislative district office to receive or expend contributions in an amount greater than the annual salary of the elective office which such person is seeking.

(2) It is unlawful for any person seeking election to any statewide elective office to receive or expend contributions in an amount greater than four (4) times the annual salary of the elective office which such person is seeking.

(3) Any person who is convicted of a violation of this section shall be punished as provided in Section 23-15-811, Mississippi Code of 1972.

SECTION 2. The Attorney General of the State of Mississippi is hereby directed to submit this act, immediately upon approval by the Governor, or upon approval by the Legislature subsequent to a veto, to the Attorney General of the United States or to the United States District Court for the District of Columbia in accordance with the provisions of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, as amended and extended.

SECTION 3. This act shall take effect and be in force from and after the date it is effectuated under Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, as amended and extended.
