House Resolution 35

A RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE WILLIAM CAREY COLLEGE SPEECH AND DEBATE TEAM FOR WINNING THE SOUTHWEST BAPTIST UNIVERSITY DEBATE SWEEPSTAKES, THE STATE TOURNAMENT AND PLACING SECOND IN THE PI KAPPA DELTA NATIONAL TOURNAMENT AT NORTHERN KENTUCKY UNIVERSITY. 

WHEREAS, William Carey College's students have long been known for the intellectual acumen and mental acuity, and have consistently fared well in various forms of mental and oratorical competition with other colleges and universities; and

WHEREAS, the William Carey College Speech and Debate Team won all of its elimination rounds and advanced to the final round, thereby becoming declared co-national champions at the Pi Kappa Delta National Tournament; and

WHEREAS, the William Carey College Speech and Debate Team won First Place in both the Northeast Louisiana Overall and Debate Sweepstakes; and

WHEREAS, the William Carey College Speech and Debate Team won First Place in the McNeese Overall Sweepstakes; and

WHEREAS, the William Carey College Speech and Debate Team took first place in the State Tournament for the third year in a row; and

WHEREAS, Tom Huebner, the Director of Forensics and Assistant Professor of Communication considers himself privileged to be able to work with such a fine group of young scholars, and is now convinced that Mississippi's best and brightest could compete with anyone; and

WHEREAS, the William Carey College Speech and Debate Team has worked hard all year and deserves the honors and recognition that it is now reaping as a result of its hard work and success; and

WHEREAS, the members of the William Carey College Speech and Debate Team Traveling Squad members include: John Miller, Jerry DiFatta, Jonathan Watts, Justin Bunton, Mandy Trammell, Leanne Burris, Jon Celoria, Rebecca Dockens, Candace Cochran, Melanie Grimes, Jackie Outley, Brian Lucas, Roger Lott, Shannon Clark and Chris Smith; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to commend excellence, especially when it is exhibited by the youth, who are the future of this state:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we hereby commend the William Carey College Speech and Debate Team upon winning first place in the State Tournament and for their many other successes in other tournaments.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to William Carey College, Tom Huebner and the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
