A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING CHIP PICKERING ON WINNING THE THIRD CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT SEAT. 

WHEREAS, Chip Pickering of Jones County, Mississippi, captured the Third Congressional District seat on November 5, 1996, with 62% of the vote; and

WHEREAS, he serves on the United States House of Representatives Committee on Agriculture, the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, the Committee on Science and as an assistant majority whip; and

WHEREAS, a seventh generation Mississippian, 33-year-old Chip Pickering was educated in the public schools of Laurel; and

WHEREAS, throughout the school year and in the summers, Chip worked on his family's dairy and catfish farm in Jones County and actively participated in 4-H; and

WHEREAS, Chip, being born with outstanding athletic talent and ability, disciplined himself and refined his skills during his youth to earn a college football scholarship; and

WHEREAS, through his experiences while growing up and from his family background, Chip developed a deep appreciation for the value of faith, family and hard work; and

WHEREAS, devoted to practicing his Christian beliefs, Chip Pickering unselfishly spent two years behind the Iron Curtain when he faithfully participated in establishing the first full-time Southern Baptist Missionary program in Budapest, Hungary; and

WHEREAS, during President George Bush's administration, Chip worked in the U.S. Department of Agriculture, loyally promoting Mississippi's agricultural products throughout the world; and

WHEREAS, as a top aide to U.S. Senator Trent Lott, Chip Pickering gained valuable experience in representing Mississippi's economic interests and in promoting the conservative values he represents; and

WHEREAS, Chip Pickering diligently works to bring to fruition the foundation of his campaign platform: balancing the federal budget; simplifying and cutting taxes; reforming the welfare system; promoting family values and protecting all life; returning power to the states; and protecting citizens' rights under the 2nd Amendment; and

WHEREAS, devoted to both church and family, Chip and his lovely wife, Leisha, are the proud parents of four sons, Will, Ross, Jackson and Asher:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Chip Pickering of Jones County, Mississippi, on winning the election for the Third Congressional District seat and hereby extend to him our best wishes for every future success in all his endeavors.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Chip Pickering and the Capitol Press Corps.
