A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING NINA T. WASHINGTON ON BECOMING THE 1997 MISS MISSISSIPPI NATIONAL TEENAGER. 

WHEREAS, Nina T. Washington is the daughter of Reverend Willis Washington, Jr., and Mrs. Glenda Washington; and

WHEREAS, Nina is the Senior Award Winner for the 1997 America's Mississippi National Teenager; and

WHEREAS, consistently excelling in her academic endeavors, Nina received numerous honors and awards during her junior year in high school such as being selected as Junior Class President, being selected by Lieutenant Governor Ronnie Musgrove to be a legislative page to the 1997 Legislature, being selected as a Class Favorite in Who's Who Among Murrah High School Students, serving as a member of the Murrah High School Volleyball Team, being nominated to receive the National English Merit Award, serving as a member of the Young Black Achievers Program at the YMCA, ranked No. 1 in the Murrah High School Junior Class of 1997, cast as the lead in the 1997 Murrah Musical, "Guys and Dolls," and won third place in the Local Science Fair; and

WHEREAS, in her sophomore year at Murrah High School, Nina was selected as Sophomore Class President, was ranked No. 5 in the Murrah High School Sophomore Class of 1996, received the National English Merit Award, was selected to participate in the Jackson Chamber of Commerce's Leadership Program, was inducted into the National Honor Society, served on the Murrah High School's Site-Based Management Committee, attained the rank of Sergeant First Class in the JROTC Program, received the Superior Cadet Award in the JROTC Program, selected as Wittiest and Class Favorite in Who's Who Among Murrah High School Students, received the first place World History Award, received the second place Algebra II Award, received the second place Spanish II Award, and was selected to Who's Who Among American High School Students; and

WHEREAS, in her freshman year at Murrah High School, Nina was ranked No. 10 in the Murrah High School Freshman Class of 1995, was selected to participate in the Jackson Chamber of Commerce's Business/Industry Teachers Exchange Day, attended the Mississippi State University Health Science Enrichment Program, served as a Cadette Girl Scout in Troop 60, was a cast member in the 1995-1996 Murrah Musical, "Bye, Bye Birdie," won third place in the Local Science Fair, served as the secretary of the Sunday School at the Greater Allen Temple A.M.E. Church, danced on the Murrah Misses Drill Team, was inducted into the Mu Alpha Theta Math Society, and was elected Wittiest in Who's Who Among Murrah High School Students; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to commend excellence, especially when evidenced by the youth of our state, who are its future:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Nina T. Washington on becoming the 1997 Miss Mississippi National Teenager and wish her continued success in all of her future endeavors.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Nina T. Washington and to members of the Capitol Press Corps.
