House Concurrent Resolution 96

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING ANGEL MARTINO ON HER PERFORMANCE AT THE 1996 OLYMPIC GAMES. 

WHEREAS, Angel Martino, the most decorated female in swimming history, was a four-time NCAA All-American and was selected the 1986 South Carolina Female Athlete of the Year; and

WHEREAS, Angel Martino won four Gold Medals at the 1986 inaugural Goodwill Games and a total of twelve medals, eight gold, in her Pan-Pacific career; and

WHEREAS, in the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, Angel Martino won a Bronze Medal in the 50 Meter Freestyle and a Gold Medal in the 400 Meter Freestyle Relay, setting a world record; and

WHEREAS, Angel Martino won the first United States medal of the 1996 Centennial Games, then gave her Bronze Medal to her friend, Trisha Henry, who is battling cancer; and

WHEREAS, Angel Martino is also the oldest United States swimmer to ever win a medal in the Olympics; and

WHEREAS, Angel Martino is a member of the Women's Sports Foundation, has been a guest on numerous nationwide radio talk shows, has been featured in national publications and major newspapers, has appeared on CNN's Talk Back Live with Susan Rook and on NBC's Today Show during the Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia, and has received on-camera experience as a corporate spokesperson; and

WHEREAS, in the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Angel Martino won a Bronze Medal in the 100 Meter Butterfly, a Bronze Medal in the 100 Meter Freestyle, a Gold Medal in the 400 Meter Medley Relay and set an Olympic and United States record when she won the Gold Medal in the 400 Meter Freestyle Relay; and

WHEREAS, Angel Martino currently resides in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and is married to Dr. Mike Martino, Ph.D. Exercise Physiology from the University of Alabama, who is a professor at the University of Southern Mississippi and has served as Angel's personal coach and trainer for the past several years:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend Angel Martino on her performance at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Angel Martino and the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
