A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE MISSISSIPPI HUMANITIES COUNCIL UPON THEIR TWENTY-FIFTH ANNIVERSARY. 

WHEREAS, the Mississippi Humanities Council was established in 1972, and will celebrate 25 years of service this year; and

WHEREAS, since its modest start under the leadership of the council's first executive director, Dr. Cora Norman, the Mississippi Humanities Council has promoted and supported the public humanities in every county to the benefit of every Mississippian; and

WHEREAS, since its founding in 1972, the Mississippi Humanities Council has received more than $9 Million from Congress for programs in the state, and each dollar has been matched by Mississippians in cash or in-kind; and

WHEREAS, the Mississippi Humanities Council's programs include everything from small study groups in public libraries, or public debate on public policy issues, to teacher institutes and major scholarly conferences at universities and colleges; and

WHEREAS, the Mississippi Humanities Council is placing special emphasis on an initiative entitled "Your Town, Mississippi: A Celebration of Community and Place" with programs underway statewide; and

WHEREAS, today under the very capable leadership of Dr. Jack White, Mississippi Humanities Council Chair, Dr. Gemma Beckley, Vice Chair, Dr. Alpha Morris, Secretary, Dr. Ann Canty, Treasurer, and council members, Dr. Ted Ammon, Mr. Wilbur Colom, Ms. Lynne Crystal, Dr. Barbara Dease, Dr. Juanita Sims Doty, Dr. Michael Harrington, Mr. Troy Holliday, Mr. Newton Ward James, Ms. Jannie Johnson, Dr. Leslie Burl McLemore, Mr. Walley Naylor, Ms. Cindy Phillips, Dr. Vivian Presley, Mr. Jack Rogers, Mr. John Hampton Stennis III, Mr. Will Sullivan III, Ms. Ann White, and Ms. Margaret Wilburn, assisted by staff members Dr. Barbara Carpenter, Executive Director, Dr. Donald Simmons, Assistant Director, Ms. Brenda Thigpen Gray, Fiscal Administrator, and Ms. Celia Booth, Office Secretary, the council continues to promote the public humanities in Mississippi through providing funding and assistance to foster dialogue around issues of human concern among educators, professors in the humanities and the general public; and

WHEREAS, on the celebration of its Twenty-fifth Anniversary of service the Mississippi Humanities Council looks forward to 25 more years of being a voice for the public humanities in the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend the Mississippi Humanities Council on its Twenty-fifth Anniversary.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the Mississippi Humanities Council and the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
