A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING LEADERS OF WAYNE COUNTY FOR CREATING GROWTH AND PROGRESS IN WAYNE COUNTY. 

WHEREAS, Wayne County was originally settled by the Choctaw Indians, the county's population today exceeds 19,000 and the City of Waynesboro boasts more than 5,000 residents now; and

WHEREAS, Wayne County is now the state's third largest county, with more than 820 square miles within its borders; and

WHEREAS, agriculture brings an estimated $83,000,000 into Wayne County each year, $53,000,000 from poultry and eggs, $23,000,000 from forestry, $3,000,000 from livestock, $1,500,000 from horticulture and hay and $740,000 from row crops; and

WHEREAS, as an example of progress in technology in Wayne County, telephone service was begun in 1907 with 21 telephones and today there are hundreds of thousands of telephones, and there are 2,762 Mississippi Power electricity customers in the county today, not counting those who obtain electricity from the rural cooperatives like Dixie Electric Power Association and East Mississippi Power Association; and

WHEREAS, the Wayne County Economic Development District, which was formed in 1988 by the Wayne County Board of Supervisors to promote business, industry and jobs, and the Wayne County Board of Supervisors and the Mayor and Board of Aldermen of the City of Waynesboro have all worked diligently to bring growth and progress to Wayne County and its hard-working citizens; and

WHEREAS, the City of Waynesboro has been declared a Key Community by the Mississippi Department of Economic and Community Development; and

WHEREAS, the Wayne County News will document the county's growth in a special "Changing Times" progress edition to be published March 6, 1997; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to commend excellence especially when it is exhibited by the leadership of the third largest county in the state:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend the Wayne County Economic Development District, the Wayne County Board of Supervisors and the Mayor and Board of Aldermen of the City of Waynesboro for the growth and progress they have worked to bring to Wayne County.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the Wayne County Economic Development District, the Wayne County Board of Supervisors, the Mayor and Board of Aldermen of the City of Waynesboro and the Capitol Press Corps.
