AN ACT TO AMEND SECTION 77-9-483, MISSISSIPPI CODE OF 1972, TO REQUIRE THAT PERSONS EMPLOYED BY THE MISSISSIPPI DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION AS RAILROAD SAFETY INSPECTORS SHALL BE QUALIFIED UNDER FEDERAL LAW TO PERFORM RAILROAD SAFETY INSPECTIONS OR SHALL BE CAPABLE OF BEING TRAINED AND QUALIFIED AS SUCH WITHIN ONE YEAR AFTER EMPLOYMENT; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES. 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:

SECTION 1. Section 77-9-483, Mississippi Code of 1972, is amended as follows:

77-9-483. Persons employed by the Mississippi Department of Transportation as railroad safety inspectors shall be qualified by the Federal Railroad Administration, or its successor agency, to perform railroad safety inspections or shall be capable of being trained and qualified as such within one (1) year after employment. After selection the inspectors shall go through thirty (30) days of intensive instruction of the laws of this state pertaining to the State Tax Commission, the Department of Public Safety, and the Mississippi Department of Transportation, together with rules and regulations of all of these departments and the laws of this state pertaining to arrests.

SECTION 2. This act shall take effect and be in force from and after July 1, 1997.
