AN ACT TO AMEND SECTION 37-9-24, MISSISSIPPI CODE OF 1972, TO DECREASE THE MINIMUM NUMBER OF EMPLOYMENT CONTRACT DAYS FOR SCHOOL TEACHERS, AND TO AUTHORIZE SCHOOL DISTRICTS ACCREDITED AT LEVEL FOUR OR FIVE TO CONTRACT WITH TEACHERS FOR FIVE FEWER DAYS THAN THE ESTABLISHED MINIMUM; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES. 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:

SECTION 1. Section 37-9-24, Mississippi Code of 1972, is amended as follows:

37-9-24. (1) Except as otherwise provided in this section, no school district shall contract with any certificated personnel for a number of employment days which shall be less than one hundred eighty-five (185).

If a school district meets Level 4 or 5 accreditation requirements, the local school board, in its discretion, may contract with the certificated personnel in the school district for less than one hundred eighty-five (185) employment days; however, no contract with certificated personnel in such districts for a full school year shall be for less than one hundred eighty (180) employment days.

(2) Certificated personnel may be employed for less than a full school year if the contract states the exact period of time for which the certificated person is to be employed.

SECTION 2. This act shall take effect and be in force from and after July 1, 1997.
