House Bill 1148

AN ACT TO PROVIDE THAT THE LEGISLATURE SHALL APPROPRIATE TO THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION ANNUALLY A SUM EQUAL TO THE AMOUNT OF THE DECREASE IN FEDERAL FUNDS FOR PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS IN THE STATE FROM FISCAL YEAR 1995; TO PROVIDE THAT THE DEPARTMENT SHALL APPORTION THE APPROPRIATED SUM AMONG PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:

SECTION 1. The Legislature shall appropriate to the Mississippi Department of Transportation annually a sum equal to the amount by which the amount of federal funds provided to the State of Mississippi to subsidize public transportation systems for the upcoming fiscal year is less than the amount of federal funds that were provided to the state to subsidize public transportation systems for fiscal year 1995. The Department of Transportation shall apportion the appropriated sum among public transportation systems in the state so that each system will receive an amount that, when added to the amount of federal funds provided to the system for the upcoming fiscal year, is equal to the amount of federal funds that were provided to the system for fiscal year 1995.

SECTION 2. This act shall take effect and be in force from and after July 1, 1997.
