House Bill 650

AN ACT TO AMEND SECTION 45-1-5, MISSISSIPPI CODE OF 1972, TO PROVIDE FOR AN INCREASE IN THE COMPENSATION OF CIVILIAN EMPLOYEES OF THE MISSISSIPPI HIGHWAY SAFETY PATROL; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:

SECTION 1. Section 45-1-5, Mississippi Code of 1972, is amended as follows:

45-1-5. (1) The Commissioner of Public Safety is authorized and empowered to employ such administrative, professional, technical, stenographic, clerical and other employees as may be necessary to perform the duties of the Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol to comply with the provisions of the Mississippi Motor Vehicle Safety-Responsibility Law, being Chapter 15 of Title 63 of the Mississippi Code of 1972, and to perform the duties under all other laws required to be administered under the supervision of the commissioner. The commissioner shall fix the salaries of all such employees where such salaries are not otherwise fixed by law.

(2) Beginning with fiscal year 1997-1998, the salary of each person employed by the commissioner under subsection (1) of this section shall be increased by Two Thousand Five Hundred Dollars ($2,500.00). If the increases in compensation provided for in this subsection would cause any employee's compensation to be in excess of the compensation of the Commissioner of Public Safety, then that employee's compensation shall be increased only to the extent that the employee's salary will be equal in amount to the compensation of the commissioner.

SECTION 2. The Legislature shall appropriate the funds necessary to provide for the increases in compensation provided for in this act.

SECTION 3. This act shall take effect and be in force from and after July 1, 1997.
