AN ACT TO CREATE A NEW CODE SECTION TO BE CODIFIED AS SECTION 9-7-124, MISSISSIPPI CODE OF 1972, TO PROVIDE THAT THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF ANY COUNTY, IN ITS DISCRETION, MAY AUTHORIZE THE CIRCUIT CLERK OF THE COUNTY TO APPOINT ONE OR MORE TEMPORARY FULL-TIME OR TEMPORARY PART-TIME DEPUTIES FOR THE PURPOSE OF ASSISTING THE CIRCUIT CLERK IN THE PERFORMANCE OF DUTIES RELATING TO CERTIFICATION OF SIGNATURES ON INITIATIVE PETITIONS; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES. 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:

SECTION 1. The following shall be codified as Section 9-7-124, Mississippi Code of 1972:

9-7-124. (1) The board of supervisors of any county, in its discretion, may authorize the circuit clerk of the county to appoint one or more temporary full-time or temporary part-time deputies for the purpose of assisting the circuit clerk in the performance of duties relating to certification of signatures on initiative petitions as provided by Section 23-17-21.

(2) The salary of any temporary deputy clerk appointed under the provisions of subsection (1) of this section shall be established by the board of supervisors and paid out of any available funds in the county general fund.

SECTION 2. This act shall take effect and be in force from and after July 1, 1997.
